La Salle bags solo third, UST stretches win streak to 4 in UAAP women’s basketball

Lee Sario scored a brace with 26 points and 11 rebounds to power La Salle past Adamson, 75-65, for the third singles seed in Saturday’s UAAP Season 85 women’s basketball tournament in China. Ynares center in Antipolo.

Sario led the Lady Archers in the second half to finish the first half with a 5-2 record, trailing the undefeated National University and the University of Santo Tomas, which dominated the University of the Philippines, 82-61, before that.

Besides Sario, Joehanna Arciga also has a double with 15 points and 12 pounds, while Charmine Torres and Fina Tchuido each won only 11 points.

La Salle recovered from a tough loss to NU last Wednesday.

Adamson fell 2-5 despite the efforts of Victoria Adeshina, who went through 1/9 of the shots in the first half to finish with 18 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.

Meanwhile, Tacky Tacatac and Nikki Villasin joined hands to extend UST’s winning streak to 4 after destroying UP to finish second with a record of 6-1 in the first round.

Tacatac launched 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Villasin played her best game of the season so far, chipping away. 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 19 minutes of play for the Tigers.

UST coach Haydee Ong said: “It’s all down to the hard work of the ladies. “Working together, defending relentlessly throughout the first round, I think that brought us to where we are now at 6-1.”

“Now that we are leading 6-1, I think we are in a better position now to get to the Quarterfinals but of course, we need to work hard again in the second round because the teams are in a bad position. look for all the others, Tacatac and Villasin. They know they are the team’s shooters so hopefully, in the second round, we will perform better than in the first round,” she added.

Eka Soriano contributed 15 points, 5 steals and 4 assists, while Brigette Santos added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

UST dominated UP from the start by a 21-6 margin over Joylyn Pangilinan early in the first quarter. Soriano overcame 21 points, 82-61, after scoring a goal in the final 2:16.

UP drops to 3-4 in fifth place when Kaye Pesquera finished with 18 points, while Stiffany Larrosa got 13 points.
