One quick scroll through Kourtney kardashianHer social media platforms will show that she has been embroiled in controversy lately, in large part due to her recent appointment as Boohoo’s so-called “Sustainability Ambassador” . But the 43-year-old entrepreneur and reality TV star has opened up about the side of her story, using Instagram to release a statement about why she chose to partner with the fast fashion retailer in that capacity.

On Tuesday, Kardashian took to the board to defend her choice, admitting, “I’ve talked over and over about doing this collection with Boohoo because the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word ‘ fast fashion’ is bad for our planet.” She added that she knew the collection would “get backlash” because sustainability and fast fashion “didn’t go hand in hand.”

“I was thinking about the fact that fast fashion, or the fashion industry in general, is going nowhere,” she continued. “I’ve been thinking about the attention this partnership will bring to people who may not be aware of the impact fast fashion is having on our planet.” Kardashian ended her statement by inviting more discussion and debate, and said she will “elaborate on the details of their changes” and how she and Boohoo “make this line more sustainable,” at some point Future.

The backlash began in early September after Kardashian launches fall capsule collection with the retailer and was named the aforementioned “Sustainability Ambassador” with the launch. In a press release, Kardashian previously said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to use my platform to foster conversations that lead to constant change and to use my voice to share helpful tips with consumers on how we can play our part. There’s still a lot of work to do and room for improvement, but I truly believe that whatever progress we make, achievable when it comes to sustainability are both a step in the right direction and should open up the conversation for future advancements.”

Kardashian has yet to share the specifics of what makes her new Boohoo collection more sustainable than the brand’s other products. And if this backlash is any indication, some consumers will continue to seek accountability from celebrities when they choose to partner with fast fashion conglomerates.
