Kirby and the Forgotten Preview – Hands-on with Kirby’s New Adventure

Kirby returns to Nintendo Switch later this month in a new 3D platform adventure, Kirby and the Forgotten Land. In it, Kirby is transported to another world, far from his home on Popstar, to a location that looks a lot like Earth, at least in the early levels. There in the typical Forgotten Land, Kirby will have to use all of his valuable Copy Abilities and a few new tricks like the very meme-like Mouth Mode to explore and survive in the context. this stranger. This week, I was able to practice the first world of the game, similar to what Switch owners can play today in a new demo now available through the Nintendo eShop.

Leave it to a Kirby game to turn what looks like a post-apocalyptic environment into a captivating and enjoyable one despite the gruesome implications of civilization completely missing from the scene. I was allowed to play through the entire first world, the crumbling, overgrown city environment known as the Natural Plains. Levels like Downtown Meadow and A Trip to Live Mall show many signs of life despite the disrepair of the buildings and streets. Moss, vines and grass have taken over swaths of concrete and steel, while wildlife such as lovable new dog-like predators known as Awoofies have taken up residence on behalf of whoever built and lived or worked. work in these abandoned buildings. Many of the walls and streets are cracked and fragile, creating plenty of places for Kirby to crash and explode to find hidden areas or secret items.

Although this new Kirby adventure is a break from its 2D roots, choosing controls and 3D environments, it plays more like Mario 3D World than Mario Odyssey. Kirby’s basic moveset is more or less the same as always. Baby can run, jump, inflate and hover in the air to reach higher and farther areas. And Kirby, of course, can still consume enemies and spew their starry essence to damage enemies. He uses these moves to progress through linear levels, take Kirby from start to finish, solve platform or environment puzzles, cannibalize enemies, and gain power on way. I was worried about bringing Kirby’s natural floating controls into a complex 3D world, but within a few minutes with my hands on Forgotten Land, my concerns were quickly brushed aside. Everything Kirby does – run, jump, float, and vacuum objects – feels tight and largely accurate. Accuracy is important given the many powers that Kirby can take on through the Copy Ability and even the new Mouth Mode.

Mouthful mode is just as captivating as in the trailers. For the uninitiated, Kirby can consume specific objects that are too large for him to chew, causing Kirby’s rosy skin to stretch around the thing and somehow control it. get that oversized snack. Mouthful mode is introduced when Kirby inhales a rusty car engine, stretching over the body and hood, but leaving the bottom of the chassis and wheels exposed. From there, I was able to drive the car around the level, crash through cracked walls, and jump over gaps using a tire burn booster.

However, Kirby’s insatiable appetite doesn’t start and end in cars. Mouthful mode in all levels of Natural Plains. Throwing down a vending machine turns Kirby into a large, waddling box that can shoot a limited amount of soda cans into his mouth, while pushing the stairs into his waterhole allows him to reposition steps in front of hard-to-reach platforms. Or it can be used to topple and smash crates or enemies. Who says stairs can only do one thing? Mouthful mode may seem like a shallow gimmick at first glance, but I found it to be an entertaining component to the puzzles so far. I rarely keep these forms for long because many people have significant limitations on portability. Luckily, even when switching to Mouth Mode, the bread and butter in Kirby’s arsenal, his Copy Ability is still equipped.

These attributes are absorbed by enemies or elemental items contained in the levels that turn our hero into the essence of whatever he eats. Classic Copy skills like Fire, Cutter, Sword, Ice, and Bomb are all featured in the opening world of Normal Plains, although these attacks are a bit more nuanced than their previous iterations. For example, pressing the attack button while equipped with a Bomb will fire a balloon that explodes in whatever direction Kirby is facing. For even more fun and destruction, I will launch bombs in all directions, causing massive destruction wherever I want to go. Standing still (or while in the air) and holding down the attack button activates a domed reticle, allowing for precise raindrops from the sky wherever I suppose to land. Just about each Copy skill has different moves and situational tweaks that are fun to explore and use.

New to the vehicle that replicates Kirby’s Copy Ability, and playable in these early levels, is the power-up called Ranger that equips Kirby with a pistol-like gun that he can fire about forward in any direction. There is also a charged attack that allows Kirby to aim the projectile in any direction and detonate a large projectile at a specified area. It’s a neat and unique skill that is maximally used in target shooting situations to unlock secrets in levels or catch a bad guy from across the stage. My skill in abilities like this was tested in a series of challenging levels known as Treasure Road.

Natural Plains has seven levels of Treasure Road that help Kirby establish a specific Copy or Mouth ability and task him with using those moves to complete a level within a deadline. The Ranger Challenge has a range of moving targets to shoot at long distances while cannons or enemies are sometimes firing at you. Another 3-star rated challenge places a traffic cone inside Kirby to use to break the water pipes and drive the water up to the next part of the level. Some levels offer plenty of time to complete them regardless of skill level, while others force the time to under a minute. Either way, completing the Treasure Path challenge will reward me with a Rare Stone, a multicolored crystal star that can be cashed into Waddle Dee Village’s Duplicate Ability upgrade.

Kirby’s main goal in each level is to rescue the caged Waddle Dees at the end of each level. Many pieces are located right on the important path and are hard to miss, while others require searching for hidden corridors or environmental triggers created by specific replication abilities. You can even earn more Waddle Dees by doing certain tasks in a level like making some flowers bloom or flying around in Car Mouth mode without falling off the cliff . Any and all saved Waddle Dees are concentrated in Waddle Dee Village, where more Waddle-folks collected will help rebuild this destroyed town. Buildings rebuilt during my time in the first world include a cinema where cutscenes can be replayed and Waddle Dee’s Weapons Shop, where Kirby can upgrade and evolve develop each Copy Ability at the cost of blueprints, Rare Stones and Coins, which are the main collectibles. These upgrades can change abilities dramatically, such as when Cutter is evolved into Chakram Cutter, adding significantly more projectiles to attacks and changing the look and feel of Kirby hats and weapons. he throws.

There are tons of other levels to explore, Treasure Paths to conquer, upgradeability, and Waddle Dee structures to build through the Natural Plains, and I was happy to see it. I had a great time with the early hours of Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, but these opening levels are really like the prologue setting up a grand adventure with lots of challenge and chaos. than. The last of the five main levels I played offered a lot of exploration and threatened to take Kirby’s life down no more than once, but the ultimate threat in my preview, a large gorilla boss named Gorimondo, who requires a bit of pattern recognition and lots of frontal bombs to knock down, is a snore. I hope that Kirby’s first true 3D adventure provides a little more depth in the game and continues to deliver increasingly weird and wonderful Mouth moments. If those two aspects follow that trajectory, I have a feeling I’m about to have a great vacation in the Forgotten Lands.
