The king’s cipher shows his initials, “C”, interwoven with the letter, “R”. The letter “R” is the first letter of “rex”, which is the Latin term for “king”. The three lines inside the upper loop of the “R” signify that Charles, 73, is the third Charles in his family. A crown embossed on the letters represents the throne of England, while a tiara representing Scotland replaces a version of the Scottish cipher. Elizabeth’s cipher is similar and uses the letter “E” and the letter “R” with a crown embossed on it. The letters don’t match and there is an “II” to show that she is the second Elizabeth in their family. In her case, the “R” stands for “regina,” the Latin word for “queen.”
