His monogram was revealed on September 26, 16 days after he officially declared king and 18 days later his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away at the age of 96. The cipher will gradually replace Elizabeth and will appear on official state documents, government buildings and public red mailboxes across the UK, according to People magazine. While the rollout will be gradual, all official letters leaving the palace will now proudly display the Charles logo starting Tuesday, September 27, according to the publication. The king’s cipher shows his initials, “C”, interwoven with the letter, “R”. The letter “R” is the first letter of “rex”, which is the Latin term for “king”. The three lines inside the upper loop of the “R” signify that Charles, 73, is the third Charles in his family. A crown embossed on the letters represents the throne of England, while a tiara representing Scotland replaces a version of the Scottish cipher. King Charles is said to have chosen the design himself from a number of designs created by the palace’s College of Arms. He adopted his official signature, which is “Charles R”, “R” again representing the Latin term for “king”.

Elizabeth’s cipher is similar and uses the letter “E” and the letter “R” with a crown embossed on it. The letters don’t match and there is an “II” to show that she is the second Elizabeth in their family. In her case, the “R” stands for “regina,” the Latin word for “queen.”

Charles’ cipher debuted on the last day of the British royal’s private national mourning.
