Kinder chocolates recalled in the US due to possible salmonella contamination

For some, there is concern that Salmonella could spoil Easter, as Italian candy company Ferrero has recalled some of its Kinder chocolate products over concerns about salmonella bacteria.

The company is recalling Kinder Happy Moments Chocolates and Kinder Mix Chocolates after salmonella was found in their facility in Belgium.

Both products are marketed as Easter candy, and with the holiday season just nine days away from April 17, the recall is a step backwards for the company and for those planning to buy it. This dish is to celebrate.

The company is also recalling its Surprise Chocolate Eggs, another product on sale over Easter, in the UK earlier this week.

‘Ferrero deeply regrets this situation. We take food safety very seriously and every step we take is guided by our commitment to care for consumers,’ the company wrote in a statement.

The company says it has detected a case of salmonella contamination in Europe associated with eggs produced in Belgium.

However, no chocolate-related cases have been detected in the US.

The company said the Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment recall applies to BJ and Costco locations in the Bay Area and Northern Nevada.

The Mix Chocolate Treats recall applies to products distributed at 14 Big Y Supermarket stores in the New England area.

The recalled products have been removed from shelves and those who purchased them are advised to return them to the store or contact Ferrero.

This recall continues what has been a rough start to spring for the iconic chocolate brand.

Its signature Kinder eggs were recalled in the UK and Ireland earlier this week due to concerns about similar salmonella bacteria.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control is investigating multiple salmonella infections in nine countries that have been linked to chocolate eggs.

The company notes that salmonella was not detected on any particular type of egg, but it is still proceeding with the recall as a precaution.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella bacteria cause 1.35 million infections each year.

The agency also reports 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths related to the condition annually.

The CDC says infected people often experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.

Rarely, the condition is fatal, and it usually goes away on its own. In severe cases, your doctor will usually prescribe antibiotics.

Salmonella is common in raw chicken, with about 5% of packages sold in stores having detectable levels.

However, thoroughly cooking raw chicken kills the bacteria and is completely safe to consume.
