Killed for blasphemy in Nigeria: ‘It felt like a spear pierced my heart’
Deborah Samuel is a 21-year-old Christian student at a college in northern Nigeria.
A mob of classmates beat her to death after accusing her of blasphemy over a voice note she shared on WhatsApp.
Her father and mother told the BBC their lives had changed dramatically since she was killed.
Blasphemy law has long been controversial in Nigeria.
Although Nigerian law is not based on any religion, 12 states in the north with a majority Muslim population have Islamic courts that consider blasphemy an offense punishable by death.
But the death sentence for blasphemy was never carried out. Instead, blasphemy charges often lead to mass murders.
