Khaos Reigns — Unleash Sektor’s Brutal New Brutality – PlayStation.Blog
Design-wise, we wanted to explore the idea that in this new timeline, Sektor fights in a cybernetic suit rather than as a full-on cyborg, a precursor to the origins of the Lin Kuei’s cybernetic innovations before they reached the point of fully converting humans into cyborgs. For Mortal Kombat 1, the goal was to convey overwhelming power and firepower through the use of her heavy weaponry. Sektor’s power comes primarily from her exosuit, which deploys a variety of weapons but also enhances her hand-to-hand combat with thrusters in her palms and feet. Despite Sektor’s new look, it was imperative to design abilities that still retain the DNA from the classic version of the character, while also fleshing out her toolkit with new powers that highlight the technology of her new exosuit.
To highlight these new attacks, we were constantly looking for opportunities to design Brutality moments that would pair well with key special moves. Brutality is a standout moment in gameplay where an opponent is destroyed in a way that is both exciting and over the top. The recipe for a good Brutality is often a combination of imagination while creating a visceral reaction with elements of humor. For us, Sektor’s Tug of War Brutality ticks each of those boxes. The attack is based on a move she performed in Mortal Kombat 3, where a mechanical arm appears and throws her opponent. In Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, we wanted to honor this by having the mechanical arm rip off the victim’s head and hold it up like a trophy. This then created a unique opportunity for how best to destroy an opponent’s head in the most daring way possible. After some consideration, our design team decided to have her head crushed as if it was stuck in a garbage disposal, with the remaining liquid spraying out of the wings in her suit, which we thought would elicit a reaction from the player.
In terms of gameplay, Sektor is an accessible space controller with good mid to long range zoning potential. Additionally, she has great aerial mobility options largely due to her use of air thrusters that can propel her in all directions, acting similarly to a double jump. One of Sektor’s new attacks is SkyDrop, where she charges into the air with her thrusters and slams down on her opponent. For the enhanced version, Sektor crushes her opponent with a hook before slamming down and blasting them into the air for a juggle opportunity that can potentially result in massive combo damage. Furthermore, Sektor’s new Blast Shield is a unique special move where she deploys a large shield while simultaneously clamping her legs to the ground. While the shield is deployed, incoming objects can no longer push Sektor back, and successfully blocking projectile attacks will charge her secondary weapon and grant her certain cancel options into special moves.
Sektor has always been a fan favorite in the Mortal Kombat Universe, and now in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, her arsenal of devastating weapons and abilities give her a rich target environment among the game’s roster of fighters. We can’t wait for players to finally get their hands on Sektor and experience all the fun and exciting things she can do.
Sektor will be a playable character when the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns expansion launches digitally on PS5 on September 24.
