Kerala withdraws Sabarimala handbook after protests | India News

KOTTAYAM: The LDF The government in Kerala on Thursday withdrew a controversial directive in a handbook distributed by the interior ministry to police officers on duty in the country. Sabarimalastates that “all pilgrims” are allowed to enter the temple as per september 2018 regulations Supreme Court judgment. The state government withdrew the directive after the BJP took issue with allegations that it had ‘bad motives’.
Despite the SC’s ruling that all pilgrims – including women of all ages – can enter the temple, the temple continues with its tradition of restricting entry to women of the age group of 10 -50 because Lord Ayyappa is considered a perpetual bachelor. The LDF government initially tried to facilitate entry of women under the SC orders, but it turned around after the backlash. The state government has since stepped cautiously on the issue.
The interior ministry distributed the handbook on Wednesday, and by Thursday morning, the BJP had protested, warning the government that it would have far-reaching consequences. Later in the day, minister devaswom K Radhakrish Nam told reporters in Sabarimala that the specific directive had been withdrawn. He explained that the directive that appeared in this year’s handbook was by mistake. “The government has no ill motive in this matter. If there are any errors in the directives, the instructions will be made to withdraw,” he said.
The Minister also sought an explanation from the ADGP, MR Ajith Kumar, on the error. The official admitted it was a “careless mistake”. He said a new handbook will be distributed soon.
No direct mention of women’s accession in Sabarimala and subsequent agitation in 2018, BJP state chief K Surendran said, “If it is decided to turn Sabarimala into a war zone again and target believers, we have not forgotten anything. The government has gone against that before. If you continue If you continue with such moves, it will be a long way off – achieving consequences,” he said.
