Keith Thurman says Mario Barrios is the ‘back’ fight after 2.5 years of layoffs

Via Jim Calfa: After a 2.5-year break from boxing, former 1st place boxer Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman will return to the ring on February 5 for what he calls his own. “come back” against Mario Barrios on FOX pay-per-view at the Michelob Ultra Arena, in Las Vegas.

Former WBA/WBC 147-lb ‘One Time’ Champion Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs) has been resting since 2019 and recovering his battery to be ready to challenge world champions Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugas.

Thurman says he wants any of those three champions after beating former 140 lb ‘regular’ WBA champion Barrios (26-1, 17 KOs) on February 5.

Unfortunately, we don’t know what 33-year-old Thurman has left at this point. As most boxing fans have noted, ‘One Time’ Thurman didn’t look good in his return bout with Josesito Lopez in 2019 after he had been out of the ring for almost two years and he lost his last fight to 40-year-old Manny Pacquiao in July 2019.

Thurman needs the Fountain of Youth

In the two and a half years since, has Thurman aged or has he discovered the ‘Fountain of Youth’ and sipped from its youth-restoring waters? If he can find the Mythical Fountain of Youth, Thurman might want to explore the waters, don’t sip it because he needs to be hugely young to compete with the lions that dominate the 147-lb division.

Boxing is not for the elderly, especially for fighters who have been gone for more than two years, as Thurman has done twice since his fight with Danny Garcia in 2017.

Thurman needs to find some panacea that would put him back where he was earlier in his career in 2015 and 2016. A time machine would be useful to Thurman right now.

This week, Thurman looks old and weak in my workout videos. He doesn’t look like a young man going to weightlifting and back training.

You can only hope for Thurman’s sake that he can fight better than he looks right now, as he has the look of someone in his mid to late 30s and that’s not must be where he needs to go.

Thurman says he wants to reclaim his No. 1 spot as the top 147-pound athlete on the planet, but that seems too far-fetched.

“Right away, We’re just trying to get back into action for myself, for the fans and for me,” Keith Thurman told KTFO Boxing in his ‘back’ match against Mario Barrios on February 5 on FOX PPV.

“Once both of their ‘One Time’ movies are back in action, and of course, I’ll be judged on my performance, which I’m looking forward to. After putting on that performance, I look forward to coming right back and closing my eyes down the pipe, looking at all the champions.

Keith wants the next title

I like a battle with Ugas, and I like a battle with Spence. I want the winner of that war. After this comeback, all the champions are right here. Go see your guy, Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman.

For the sake of fans, Thurman should at least prove he values a title before facing champions Spence, Crawford or Ugas.

If Thurman was hit on a silver platter against one of those guys after just one fight in his ‘regain’, it would be like he earned a day’s pay before disappearing for two to three Another year.

Fans have seen how Floyd Mayweather Jr returns every few years for his defeat to a poor opponent in his PPV fights.

Boxing doesn’t need Thurman to follow in Mayweather’s footsteps in employing the same strategy for bank-level events that left fans feeling frustrated and left out.
