Via Sam Voz: Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman says he’ll be open to a rematch with Danny Garcia if it’s a fight he wants.
Former WBA/WBC Welterweight Champion Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) beat Garcia by split decision in 2017 in a match close enough to warrant a rematch.
Surprisingly, Danny and his father/coach Angel Garcia never asked for one. Like Thurman, Garcia’s career has faltered since his death in 2017, and he hopes to reinvent himself at 154 at 34.
Ideally, Thurman wants a title against welterweight champions Errol Spence Jr or Terence Crawford, but it looks like neither of those will be next for him.
If Thurman does face Danny next, it will require some people to sit around and wait for him to rest after his grueling 12-round decisive win over Jose Benavidez Jr last Saturday night.
“Waiting for a phone call,” Thurman said Battle Center. “I was told Danny Garcia wanted a rematch. I do not know. Danny could never pass the Keith Thurman test. I beat that boy, and I’m not even at my best. I had bone surgery.
“At 154, Danny wouldn’t be at 154. If he were given the chance to be a three-division world champion. I can compromise to make a good fight happen,” Thurman said when asked about his thoughts on going to 154 to take on Danny.
“Right now, I’m ready to go. I don’t know when he’ll be back in the ring. It was a good fight. I’m surprised it took so long to bark in the rematch.
“If he thought he was going to be stronger at 154, he was already a puncher. So I don’t really see a benefit other than not gaining weight. I think some of these people are being lazy, that’s my personal opinion.
“The chance to be a trilogy means something. He wants it back. We can run it again. I think I have his number. I don’t think he has my number.
“I just thought I knew how to beat Danny Garcia. I don’t think they have a real strategy or capacity to override what I put on the table. It’s a chess match, and I’m a big player,” Thurman said.
