After a three-year hiatus, Kate Middleton started a solo tour to Denmark, looking for like regal as one would expect. The Duchess of Cambridge embraced one of her signature silhouettes for the last half of her day: a gray two-piece, knee-length gown by the haute couture house. Catherine Walker. Middleton adorned her look with a black Mulberry bag, stylish leather gloves, Gianvito Rossi spiked loafers, and pearls. Although the coat dress has become almost synonymous with Middleton, this particular outfit seems to be a nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
Indeed, Middleton’s silhouette is one that Princess Diana embraced more than a decade ago. Many will recall the gray velvet and herringbone coat the Princess of Wales wore for Children’s Charity Barnabas in 2008. Lady Di designed it as a midi dress, layering it on a white button-down shirt for a chic look.
Middleton’s admiration for the late mother-in-law is evident, as she donned a similar Diana-inspired outfit for her meeting with Queen Margrethe and Princess Mary. She also paid homage to Diana’s legacy as she wore the Princess jewelry for her photo shoot 40th birthday portrait.
Fur coats are what Middleton usually wears. During a visit to the Royal Opera House in 2019, she opted for a purple Oscar de la Renta gown. That same year in Scotland, she was spotted in a plaid Alexander McQueen coat with the Duke of Cambridge while visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum. When she and Queen Elizabeth II visited King’s College in London, she wore a gray Catherine Walker belted gown, and the list goes on. A timeless dress is Middleton’s secret to looking sleek and regal.
