Karnataka will convert 35,000 buses to trams by 2030: State Transport Minister


Following in the footsteps of Delhi and Maharashtra, Karnataka is also planning to launch all tram fleets in the state by the end of the decade, State Transport Minister B Sriramulu said during a legislative meeting on Wednesday. The minister is said to have made the statement while answering a question during question time. According to the Minister, so far, the State has not purchased any electric buses, but they are being operated on a contract basis. However, in the near future, Karnataka will soon convert buses to trams.

Transport Minister Karnataka B Sriramulu, in response to Wednesday’s legislative conference, assured that all 35,000 buses in the state would be converted to tram to 2030. According to information provided by the Minister, BMTC is currently operating 90 electric buses as of December 2021.

According to PTI’s report, the Minister also emphasized that the price of diesel oil is increasing. He mentioned that diesel buses incur a cost of Rs. 68.53 per kilometer, while the contract electric bus costs Rs. 64.67 per kilometer.

According to the Smart City Project, the state is operating 90 electric buses as of December 2021 for 12 years, while the state has ordered 300 electric buses under the Adoption and Production Program (Hybrid and) The central government’s faster tram – FAME II scheme, according to the Minister.

The price per kilometer of these buses is Rs. 61.90. 75. They have been operating since August 15, 2022.

In May this year, the Delhi government approved the launch of 1,500 low-floor electric buses in the fleet of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Brihanmumbai Electric Transport and Supply (BEST) has also more electric bus for its team.
