Karnataka Increases Quota for Scheduled Castes, Tribes, Crosses Court Cap
Bengali:
Employment and education quotas for Scheduled Actors and Tribes have been increased in Karnataka through an executive order. Minister Basavaraj Bommai made the announcement today, saying the “historic decision” would “shine into their lives and enhance them by providing the right opportunity”.
“Today my cabinet made a historic decision to approve an ordinance increasing reservation rates for my siblings from the SC/ST community, from 15% to 17% and 3% to 7. %,” Mr. Bommai said in a series of tweets.

However, the decision would push reservations in the state past the 50% limit imposed by the Supreme Court. The total percentage of reservations in the state will now be 56 percent.
This is why the government chooses an executive order instead of following the legislative route. The Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs told local media there could be “problems” if the bill was introduced in Parliament.
State Minister of Scheduled Tribal Welfare B Sriramulu has said that to ensure legal protection for the quota increase, the state government will “recommend bringing it under the Constitution’s Route 9”.
The state cabinet gave the green light for the quota increase on October 8. It is an important move for the Bommai government, which is already facing corruption accusations from the opposition. Council elections will take place in the state next year, with the BJP hoping for a second term.
The state’s BJP has battled speculation that Mr Bommai could be replaced in the run-up to the election.
Following the decision to increase the quota for SC/ST, the dominant Vokkaliga community in the state increased their reservation demand from 4% to 12%.
Mr. Bommai said the decision to increase the SC/ST quota was being interpreted in many ways but “it is important that the SC/ST community welcomed the decision”.
“Congress has ruled the country for seven decades by talking about social justice in speeches. The request to increase reservations has been around for 50 years, and Congress leaders haven’t had time to watch it. status of the SC/ST. The coalition government previously established the Nagamohan Justice Das Commission, but our government has shown a commitment to implementing this historic decision,” he added.
