Bengali:

A man was stabbed in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka allegedly when the two groups clashed over a banner with a photo of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, whom the BJP considers one of its biggest symbols. Reports say one group erected the poster and another removed it and tried to replace it with a poster depicting Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler who fought against the British and was killed during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War.

Soon, the police arrived and confiscated the poster. They also had to use batons to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. Officials planted the national flag at the place where the poster was placed.

A ban on mass gatherings has been enacted in the area and additional forces have been called in.

“We imposed Section 144. Tension broke out and so we had to resort to remedial measures. We tried to disperse the crowd. We are verifying if he was stabbed because of the issue. similar or not,” said Laxmi Prasad, a senior police officer for the area.

The man who was stabbed in the clash is being treated at a nearby hospital. Police said he was stable.

The honor of Tipu Sultan has become controversial in the state, with the BJP and its ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh seeing him as a brutal king who persecuted Hindus and Christians, especially especially those who refuse to convert to Islam.

The first decision by the Parliamentary government to celebrate Tipu Sultan’s birth was vehemently opposed by the locals in Coorg, where he had his kingdom.

The violence follows yesterday’s controversy over a state BJP government advertisement that omitted a photo of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and included Vinayak Savarkar.

When the BJP declared it a deliberate decision, leaders of Congress accused it of being politically motivated. The party claimed that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai did it to deflect attention from the issue of leadership change and demanded that he be fired.
