The Gainesway hybrid Spendarella maintained her impeccable track record with a 3/4 length win at the GII Appalachian S. Organized by the Japan Racing Association in Keeneland on Saturday.
Sent straight to the head of affairs, the bay was soon led inside by Glenall (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) and was content to perch for a moment turning into a backstretch. Under the guidance of Tyler Gaffalione, the favorite still stands his ground like a spear pointing home. She passed just before the 1/4 post and withstood Dolce Zel’s final rally to win by 1 3/4 length. It was then 3/4 length ahead of Skims, who closed strong for third.
Gaffalione, who is riding the third winner of the day and the second straight stake winner after Prevalence (Medaglia d’Oro) in GIII Commonwealth S., said, “She took the first turn very comfortably. She’s in a great rhythm, and the other horse [Glenall]going inside didn’t bother her at all. She is beautifully relaxed and has some leg swing. ”
Coach Graham Motion added, “She makes me look good. She just makes things too easy. She’s very professional, she’s a martial artist – she clearly loves it. She makes me look smart.
“I may have heard of Ascot, so we’ll see. I need to talk to Wesley [Ward, who has enjoyed notable success at the Royal meeting]. ”
