The difference was clear last night. Of the two quarterbacks selected to the top 10 in the 2020 NFL Draft on the field on Sunday night, only one had a chance to be one of the best players in the league.

That player is Justin Herbert. He’s fully armed against the Miami Dolphins and does whatever it takes to win the ball for them. Herbert used all his athletic talents, size and mobility, to avoid passers-by, roll out and climb onto the bag for a stellar performance on the road. Sunday Night Football.

Herbert’s efforts to avoid the oncoming Dolphins defenders resulted in the Los Angeles Chargers beating the Dolphins 23-17, and he overcame 367 yards while averaging 7.2 yards per day. attempts with no spins. He’s had a rough patch this season, but they’re mostly related to injuries. That includes a painful rib cartilage injury he went through.

As for the Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa had the worst run of this season as a starter. Though he doesn’t flip the ball over, he’s averaging under 7.5 yards at a time this season for the first time. Tagovailoa completes 35.7% of his passes and averages just 5.2 yards per take.

That performance, in this new and improved Dolphins attack, likely won’t be indicative of Tagovailoa’s future playstyle. He’s quickly coming back to the fire with a road game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, but the Bills have injury problems all over the field. Being able to fend off another offense that has struggled in recent weeks is exactly what the Dolphins needed to get back on track.

And it’s possible that the Chargers didn’t make it to the knockout stages this season, but fans of both fan bases should be clear who is the better quarterback. Tagovailoa is the type of midfielder who can put his pass catchers in the best position to use their talents to turn good plays into smashes.

However, Herbert can do that and more. He can keep a shuffled team competitive enough to stay in the knockout race. Then, when talent in a skill position comes back from injury, he can do more than put them in a position where they can maximize their talent. Herbert could serve in the right place creating opportunities they could not create on their own.

While last night’s Chargers’ final score total wasn’t terribly impressive, Herbert’s performance absolutely was. The Dolphins chased the Chargers’ attack line that was missing their best player — Rashawn Slater. While they can create pressure, Herbert’s play, in the midst of all that chaos, has allowed the Chargers to never fall behind against one of the AFC’s best teams.

Injuries may have marred the Chargers’ 2022 season, but their win on Sunday shows that as long as Herbert is at center, the team will always have a good chance of winning.
