While talk to reporters last week, newly hired Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus commented that his offense will be the “quarterback” for the first leg of the 2021 first-round draft, Justin Fields, who has finally returned became the team’s starter in his rookie season and produced a string of results on his debut campaign.
As noted by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Fields ended last season with the NFL’s highest layoff rate among eligible players at 11.8%. Fields addressed that aspect of his game on Tuesday.
“There were things in last year’s movie that you could see, of course, there were some cases where I was fired because of my fault,” the 23-year-old admitted. “At the end of the day, it just comes in to limit those mistakes and get the ball out and not take those sacks.”
Fields added that he is varying his footwork to try to get rid of at least some of the sacks he got as a first-year pro.
“Last year, I brought my right foot forward in the gun so I worked a lot to get my left foot forward in the gun,” he said.
Every ESPN Statistically, Fields finished its 28th 2021 season overall with a rating of 73.2 passers and with a 26.4 total QBR the worst in the league. Needless to say, he’ll have to improve on those numbers starting September if the Bears commit to him as their future franchise player in the position.
