July Trophy at Newmarket in conjunction for Twilight Jet despite Royal Ascot defeat | Racing news

Twilight Jet could bid to make a comeback after his disappointing showdown at Royal Ascot during the Darley July Cup at Newmarket next month.

After an impressive comeback in the Lacken Stakes at Naas in May, hopes were high ahead of the Commonwealth Cup last week, but he finished last out of 20 runners-up.

Coach Michael O’Callaghan soon discovered all was not well with his three-year-old star, but hopes the boy can be back in time to run on July Stadium in two weeks’ time. .

“He was quite ill after Ascot. He performed very badly after the race and the next morning he was very, very tired,” the coach said.

“Obviously he’s got something brewing and it just happened to come up during the race. These things can be unavoidable at times when horses are moving and everything.

“He’s come back fresh and healthy in the last few days and he’ll probably be in the Cup next July because he’s very, very good.

“Even after the gate opened the day before, I watched the race thinking ‘this isn’t him,’ and that’s how it happened – he didn’t run any races.

“If we can work those things out and get him back, he’ll have a crack at some of the big races for the rest of the season.”
