Via Dan Ambrose: Hall of Fame fighter Julian Jackson believes Gennadiy Golovkin has a good chance of beating Canelo Alvarez on September 17 in their trio match in Las Vegas.
Jackson felt Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) possessed the strength and heart to beat Canelo in their third match on the DAZN PPV at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Jackson’s son, Julius, feels that 40-year-old Golovkin must start fast against Canelo to have a chance of winning as he notes that he started slow in the final contest against Ryota Murata in September. Private.
Falling behind would immediately leave Golovkin behind eight balls, needing to score by knockout or wipe out the last six innings to claim a draw or a tight win.
Given the way the umpires scored the first two Canelo-Golovkin matches in Las Vegas, a decisive victory may not be possible for Golovkin.
“There is a possibility. There is a tremendous possibility because of his strength, because of his heart and dedication,” Julian Jackson told Fighthype when asked if Gennadiy Golovkin can beat Canelo Alvarez. “I think it’s going to be a good fight,” Jackson said.
“Just from what I saw, especially in his last fight, I don’t think he was like that,” Julius Jackson said of Gennadiy Golovkin looking nothing like the boxer he used to be.
“I really liked how he showed up later in his final battle [against Ryota Murata],” Jackson continued about Golovkin. “He looks more like himself. He plays more fluently as himself, but he couldn’t start as slow against Canelo.
“His reaction time and body language were different. But I’m looking forward to seeing it. The mind can do powerful things. If he has the right mindset, like the first two skirmishes, it can still be a good melee fight.
“But he can’t start slow. He can’t be lazy with his time. His timing was skewed a bit in that final battle. As long as he has the right mindset, I think he’ll be fine. He is my son, so I like him very much.
“His output and timing are slower. He didn’t pick the right shots as usual. Sometimes he doesn’t throw it fast, but he throws accurate punches. You don’t see it the same; it’s not the same. That worries me for the war.
“He is [Golovkin] will have to be fierce in the first two rounds, at least in terms of strength. That should make Canelo think. So he’s going to have to make some really good shots soon, so Canelo isn’t confident on the pitch.
“If Canelo is confident, it’s over. He has to start hard, make some good shots, and then hit back more like in the third and fourth innings. The stab worked for him. But for Canelo, he’s going to have to hit something hard for him to say, ‘Let me stay smart,’ Jackson said.
