In the main support weight class, the WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2, 14 KOs) weighed 111 lbs, and his opponent, 2016 Olympic athlete Samuel Carmona (8-0.4 KOs), weighs 111.4 lbs.
Is Juan Estrada seeing better days?
“On Saturday, the trilogy to be completed between Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada will end in Arizona. Chris Mannix speaking on DAZN’s JABS.
“Gonzalez won back in 2012 and Estrada made a controversial decision in 2021, and here they are back again. How do you see this fight going?”
“First, I think Gonzalez made a razor easy decision. I think he did enough in that fight,” Ade Oladipo said. “I see this one goes the way of Chocolatito again.
“I have been impressed by Chocolatito for a long time. I think you’re looking at a very special fighter here, and I love the way he’s eliminated [Julio Cesar] So does Martinez. I know Martinez isn’t at Estrada’s level, but he’s young, hungry and gaining weight.
“I thought he was going to give Chocolatito trouble, but he quickly discovered that the game has many levels. Estrada, in her victory [Argi] Cortes, if it hadn’t been for that seventh round kill, it might have gone Cortes’ path.
“I feel like someone on the way up [Chocolatito]and those who have just stayed and have settled down a bit, and I think it’s Estrada that has settled down.
“I think Chocolatito, although the older of the two, he has had too much. I think he really has. I have to raise my hand and say that when he lost to Rungvisai in a row, I think it was Chocolatito, at the highest level.
“Then he fought Kal Yafai, I remember thinking, ‘Let’s see how you [Roman Gonzalez] can resist Kal Yafai.’ A lot of people look at Yafai’s recent performance and think he’s not playing well. Yafai had some good wins.
“Remember, he beat Yashida and beat Gonzalez. The way Chocolatito plays against him, an undefeated fighter, shows me that there is still a lot to be had. Even though he’s 35 years old, I think there’s still something in Chocolatito. I hope he gets the W,” Oladipo said.
“I think you’re right when you say a boxer is going up and a boxer is starting to drop a little bit. I think that’s a fair way of looking at Chocolatito and Estrada,” Mannix said.
Chocolatito is still increasing
“It is remarkable that we are saying that Roman Gonzalez is flourishing at this point in his career because he has recovered so well from previous defeats. [Srisaket] Sor Rungvisai, especially the last one.
“Me too, he won his second game against Estrada, and I like the way he looks at Julio Cesar Martinez. Now, Martinez, I think he’s shown a bit of a limited fighter. He’s all offensive and defenseless.
“Chocolatito just teased and hit him making me wonder what Julio Cesar Martinez would look like after all that. But when watching the match between Estrada and Cortes, it was an opponent placed in front of Estrada to make him look great against him, and he was not.
“That makes you a little worried about where Estrada is at this point in his career. Yes, he’s been out of action for a long time and maybe he’s rusted more than we thought, but he didn’t look that good in his last fight, and neither did Chocolatito.
“Let me ask you this question. Who is this war more important to? These two certainly look like they’re headed for the Hall of Fame when their boxing careers come to an end, but as we step into the trio, who needs this win more? Mannix talks about Gonzalez and Estrada.
