Joshua: “Facing doesn’t mean nothing”, ready for Usyk

Via Barry Holbrook: Anthony Joshua says his long confrontation with Oleksandr Usyk today in a head-to-head match “makes no sense” because head-to-head doesn’t win matches.

Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs), who weighed 244.5 lbs at today’s weigh-in, says confrontation and weights mean nothing.

The only thing that matters is what goes on inside the ring as he takes on unified heavyweight champion Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs) in a rematch at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua, 32, looks to have gained during the weightlifting and he is clearly feeling the pressure on him. AJ can’t lose this war if he wants to continue to be seen as one of the elite heavyweights in the department.

“Not much. It was just a face-to-face. For me personally, Facing doesn’t mean nothing”Anthony Joshua said after weight in. “It’s just about the bells and us throwing the skins, really. Facing no victory or defeat.

“I’ll be honest; All of this is not important. It’s just about the fight,” Joshua said when asked about his thoughts on Usyk’s weight. All this stuff, weight, face, nothing matters to me. I’m just looking forward to the fight.

“I am only ready for 12 rounds. 100% ready for 12 rounds; Anything missing that’s a bonus.

“It was a fierce confrontation. They are ready,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV. “I think both boys are quite emotional. I think Usyk has been very emotional this week, and he has a lot going on around his world.

“AJ really wants to win. You saw that in the confrontation. He is just preparing for battle and war. I did an interview with the BBC yesterday, and the presenter said to me, ‘If AJ loses, sure, he’s over. I mean, how many backs can a man have? ‘

“I asked, ‘what are you talking about?’ But that’s the pressure he’s under. People are erasing him. People are knocking him out in the fight, saying if he loses, ‘It’s for him.’ The answer is loads of pressure.

“I don’t think he cares about those opinions. He prefers to put pressure on himself. He doesn’t want to lose this war. He is a winner and loves to compete. He lost last time and doesn’t want to lose again,” Hearn said.
