Johnny Nelson has made a somewhat unexpected choice for promoter of the year as 2022 draws to a close.
Nelson was in the news this week when he was listed on The King’s Honors, receiving an MBE for his success in the sport as the longest reigning cruiser class champion. as well as his work in the local community.
Now, he is looking for his own prize. Since retiring, ‘The Entertainer’ has worked as a Sky Sports pundit for many years, but in an interview with iFL TVNelson revealed that he believes DAZN’s Eddie Hearn will be the promoter of the year.
“You look at promoter of the year, I have to say that Eddie [Hearn]. I have to say that Eddie and I know maybe Ben [Shalom] wouldn’t like it, Ben is doing an excellent job and his time is up, but I have to tell Eddie Hearn.
I think Hearn has arranged some matches against each other all over the world and this guy’s work ethic is ridiculous. I think Ben’s time will come, Ben is now lining up to say, this is what I did, you’ll look back and look at what I’ve achieved.”
“You have to tell Eddie, like it or not. I’m obviously not wearing a Sky hat right now, but I think he [Hearn] did a great job as a promoter.”
Matchroom, led by Hearn, and Sky have been rivals since they moved to DAZN, and promoter Ben Shalom have made great strides in the UK market following their partnership with Sky Sports.
Hearn has staged shows across 9 countries in 2022, and has had big fights in Taylor-Serrano, Usyk-Joshua II and Canelo-GGG III, with Shalom hosting exciting events like Shields-Marshall , Eubank-Williams and Khan-Brook.
With Frank Warren having a record attendance at Wembley and having what is considered the best heavyweight stabilizer, competition in the UK is high – which can only be good for the boxers as well as the heavyweights. martial arts fans.
