John Major rubbishes The Crown’s depiction of Charles ‘trying to force Queen’s abdication’ in 1990s | UK News

Sir John Major has denounced The Crown’s reported description of Charles’ attempts to force the Queen to abdicate during her time in office as “malicious, damaging fiction”.

The next series of Netflix the show is said to include scenes of the then-Prince of Wales, played by Dominic West, giving a brief introduction to Sir John (Jonny Lee Miller) against Queen in an attempt to replace her.

According to The Mail on Sunday, writers claim that in 1991, Charles believed his mother, then 65, had made the same mistake as Queen Victoria by not letting her young heir take over.

A spokesman for Sir John told the newspaper: “Sir John has not cooperated in any way with Crown. Nor has he ever been approached by them to fact-check any of the script material in this series or any other film.

“There was never any discussion between Sir John and the then Prince of Wales about any possibility of the late Queen Elizabeth II abdicating.”

The spokesperson said that if such scenes were to be aired, “they would not be considered anything more than harmful and malicious fiction. A pile of nonsense content for sale for no other reason than to be creates maximum dramatic impact – and is completely untrue”.

Sir John, who replaced the deposed Margaret Thatcher, is said to be close to the Queen.

In particular, he criticized a reported scene in which he and his wife Dame Norma Major described senior royals as “dangerously paranoid and out of place”.

An episode of the fifth season, titled Queen Victoria Syndrome, is said to show the Prince of Wales speaking eloquently about a poll which found that 47% of the public believes he should replace his mother as King.

He then arranged an audience with Sir John in which he shared his plans to take over from her.

Broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, a friend of King Charles, told The Mail on Sunday: “The crown is full of nonsense, but this is nonsense on stilts.”

It was announced on Wednesday that Charles III’s coronation will take place on May 6, 2023.

It has not been decided yet whether Britons will be entitled to an extra bank break.

Season five of The Crown will be released on Netflix in November, with images released this week showing young Prince William and Harry for the first time.
