John Lundstram: Rangers win appeal for red card in Hibernian draw | Football news
Rangers won their case over the dismissal of John Lundstram in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at the Hibernian.
The midfielder was shown a red card by referee Willie Collum, however, his penalty for a late tackle on Martin Boyle has now been reduced to a yellow card.
That means Lundstram will now be available for Rangers’ next two domestic games – against Ross County on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership and Tuesday’s League Cup game against the Queen of the South.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side had led 2-1 at the time of their dismissal and were later reduced to nine when Alfredo Morelos was also shown a red card.
Speaking on Ref Watch, former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher said: “You look at the referee’s point of view, you look at his position… I understand why he got a red card that day. .
“I think, if he looks back at that, he’ll think it wasn’t the ball he thought it was.
“I think Lundstram was very, very unlucky and a yellow card was enough. I think it was a cynical act, not dangerous and not a serious foul.”
Gio: VAR will help the referee make the right decision
When asked after the game about wanting VAR to be introduced as soon as possible, Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst said Sports sky: “I’ve seen it before that it helps the references make the right decisions and allows them to spend time implementing them.
“Especially with the red cards.
“I think then you can see if they get a red card because now once you’ve made a decision you can’t overturn it.
“I’m a big fan of VAR but until it’s here, we can’t change that.
“I think John Lundstram’s red card was harsh, I think it was a foul and a yellow card but he had no intention of hitting him hard.”
‘We need consistency in decisions’
Speaking on Sky Sports News, former Hibs quarterback Scott Allan said:
“There is no question that he (Lundstram) makes difficult.
“You see that in the Manchester City vs Newcastle game, once they check on VAR, it’s a yellow card.
“Jake Doyle-Hayes’ handling is probably worse than John Lundstram’s. We’re just asking for a little bit of consistency because these decisions have an impact on the game.
“With Morelos, I think his reputation cost him there. Some strikers would say he was trying to feel him put the ball in, but he swung his arm out and once. again for the arbitrator to decide.
“If you have a reputation for being that kind of player then sometimes that can work against you.”
