‘John Klingberg’ Star: ‘I Don’t Feel Appreciated’

It was Friday afternoon when reports emerged that Dallas Stars guard John Klingberg requested a trade from the team.

And on Saturday afternoon, Klingberg somewhat played down that rumor by saying, “It’s not entirely true.”

But what Klingberg has said is that contract negotiations with the Stars have been going on in silence: “For me as a player, I don’t feel appreciated.”

For Klingberg, who is a pending UFA this season, a big payday looms. He is about to do a seven-year deal that pays him an AAV of $4.25 million.

In November, former DailyFaceoff writer and now Dallas Stars employee Steve Greely considers what Klingberg’s next deal could look like. Greely expects to supply the Stars for seven years with an AAV of $7.75 million, while the Klingberg camp could be in about eight years for $9 million. Finally, Greely projects a seven-year deal with AAV of $8.25 million.

Drafted by the club in the fifth round of the 2010 draft, Klingberg emerged as one of the league’s top attacking defenders over the past decade.

He joined the NHL in 2014-15 with the Stars Landing on the league’s Rookie of the Year after a season that saw him score 11 goals and 40 points in 65 games from the end of the game. Since then, his output has increased.

His best season in the league came in the 2017-18 season when he scored 67 points in 82 games.

Meanwhile, this year, Klingberg continues to produce a solid clip despite playing the fewest minutes of his career, 21:48 every night. In 25 games, Klingberg has scored one goal and 16 points.

While he continues to provide tremendous value in terms of power play, his five-on-five output has fallen to the lowest level of his career, while his defensive contribution remains on average.

But the downtrend of icy times over the past four seasons has come with the arrivals of Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell, both of whom have broken Klingberg’s total.

On top of that, both were locked to important long-term transactions. Heiskanen is in the first year of an eight-year contract that pays him an AAV of $8.45 million, while Lindell is in the third year of a six-year contract that pays him an AAV of 5.8 millions of dollars.

This is sure to be one of the larger storylines to follow in the coming months.
