Former Sky Sports darts commentator and broadcaster John Gwynne has died aged 77 following a battle with cancer.
Gwynne was part of the Sky Sports darts commentary team for two decades – he defended WDC’s first world championship in 1993 – until he retired in 2013 after participating in 20 world championship and 20 world matches.
He is also a regular match reporter on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday and also covers cricket, rugby and motorway tournaments.
Gwynne, who covered darts for radio and the ‘Darts Phone Line Commentary’ before joining Sky Sports, after transitioning from his early career as a teacher, was introduced. inducted into the Professional Darts Group Hall of Fame in 2014.
PDC CEO Matt Porter said: “John is a respected and well known figure in the sports media and this is a sad time for everyone who knows him.
“As part of the original Sky Sports commentary team with Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning, John’s distinctive voice was part of the soundtrack to PDC’s founding years, and they formed an iconic trio statue.
“John is extremely passionate about the sport of darts and has contributed greatly at every level of his career.
“We send our condolences and sympathies to John’s family and friends.”
