Joe Callan joins Whitsbury Manor Stud

Joe Callan has been appointed head of blood and sales at Whitsbury Manor Stud, home to this year’s top male leader, Havana Gray (GB) and breeder of G1 winner Dewhurst S Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Formerly National Stud in Newmarket, Callan spent 12 months as interim general manager at Market Rasen Racecourse.

Stud Director Ed Harper said, “I have waited a long time to locate the right candidate to help us grow our business and feel that Joe is the ideal person for the role. Joe’s industry experience and excellent communication skills will be a great asset to our clients and I can’t wait for him to get started. He will be busy. “

After completing both the National College of Ireland and Godolphin Flying Start degrees, Callan also spent time in Australia working for Gai Waterhouse and Arrowfield Stud, and closer to home at Baroda Stud and Colbinstown Stud.

Callan said: “I am delighted to be joining the Whitsbury Manor team. “Ed and his team consistently produce the finest horses, as Chaldean has shown this season, and they have amassed a very impressive stallion backed by a number of breeders. The best creators in Europe who I look forward to working with.

“This is indeed a very exciting time for the stallion as Showcasing consistently proves to be an excellent stallion, and it is hard to think of a stallion with more promise than Havana Grey. Due Diligence provides a consistent stream of winners, and I’m excited to see Sergei Prokofiev’s first ponies enter the sales round in the coming months. “
