The First Lady and the President Joe Biden hosted the event on the South Lawn of the White House to celebrate the relationship of the United States with France and they were attended by the President of France Emmanuel Macron and the lady, the First Lady Brigitte Macron.

During a media presentation of the State Banquet, the first lady talked about how the evening decorations would honor both countries and their values. “This design dinner inspired by our common flag colors—red, white and blue—and our shared values: freedom and democracy, equality and friendship,” she said. “These things form the basis of our lasting friendship.”

Biden also explained that she wanted the evening to be a special celebration between the United States and its “oldest ally,” the French. “Our hope is that the end result will be a night that balances the beauty of our friendship with the seriousness of our purpose. And we hope that French citizens everywhere feel our warm welcome,” she said. “May our relationship grow stronger, our relationship deeper, and our future brighter as we strengthen our partnership.”

The State Banquet marks the first time in Joe Biden’s presidency and it will be the first time such an event has been held in three years. The last State Dinner was held in 2019 by the then President Donald Trump, and that’s with leaders from Australia.

Before the State Banquet, the Bidens and the Macrons had a double date dinner at Fiola Mare in Georgetown. As they left, Jill and Brigitte were found standing close to each other, laughing and talking. Joe tweeted a photo of the four of them at a booth together, with him and the French president enjoying some ice cream. “Welcome some friends to town,” he wrote.

In her remarks at the preview, Jill talked about her strong relationship with Macron, including watching women’s basketball at the Tokyo Olympics with the president and meeting his wife in Rome. “I found myself cheering with President Macron in a three-on-three women’s basketball game. Although we have opposing views, there is a comradeship in the common love we have for our teams,” she said. “And I got to know Mrs. Macron in Rome, where we immediately collaborated as educators.”
