Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano 2 preorders May 14 on Showtime

Via Dan Ambrose: Undefeated middleweight champions Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano will meet in a rematch scheduled for May 14 on Showtime at a location still to be determined.

For the Charlo-Castano 2 rematch to take place, a step aside must be given to obligatory Bakhram Murtazaliev of Charlo’s IBF.

The match was recently adjourned from the original March 19th due to WBO 154-lb champion Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) tearing his right biceps against Terrell Gausha.

154-lb IBF/WBA/WBC champions Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) and Castano battled for an unpopular 12th round draw last July in San Antonio, Texas. Scoring was everywhere, meaning nothing in the eyes of some boxing fans.

Score for Charlo v. Castano:

  • 114-114
  • 117-111 – Jermell
  • 114-113 – Castano

Charlo vs. Castano II could not be held at the originally scheduled venue at Crypto.com Arena. That venue will be used for an NBA or NHL game on May 14.

The downside of postponing the Charlo-Castano 2 match is that the original co-feature match between Tim Tszyu and Terrell Gausha that required a 154lb WBO will not be on the Charlo-Castano 2 card rescheduled for May 14.

That fight made the headlines for their event this month on March 26 on Showtime in Minneapolis.

The World Boxing Organization wanted WBO 154-lb champion Castano to defend against his No. 1 opponent Tszyu (20-0, 15 KOs) next after his bout with Jermell Charlo was postponed. again.

However, the top boxing champions settled things smoothly with WBO and 27-year-old Tszyu by moving his bout against Terrell Gausha (22-2-1, 11 KOs) on Showtime.

Defeat in the fight between Tszyu vs. Gausha is a blow to the Charlo vs. Castano 2 because that contest will attract a lot of fans.

Castano, 32, will start playing in two weeks, and he should be ready to play on May 14 as long as there aren’t any setbacks with a biceps injury.

“Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano’s undisputed young middleweight rematch is now set for May 14 on Showtime; source told ESPN. The WBO has ruled that the fight can go ahead but must take place no later than May 14 after Castano suffered a tear in his bicep which forced it to be postponed.” Mike Coppinger.

“Castano suffered a slight tear in his right bicep after he was accidentally elbowed by Terrell Gausha during a match last month, according to the source. PBC put together an impromptu card with Tim Tszyu and Gausha to match Tszyu and the WBO, who are calling for mandatory. “

Castano will fight for the second time since winning the WBO junior middleweight belt in February 2021 with a decisive 12th round win over Patrick Teixeira.

Jermell will likely be the favorite in the rematch against Castano on May 14 as he has better hand speed and power. The last time they fought, Jermell had hurt Castano several times.
