Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano 2 moves to March 12 or 19 Boxing News 24

Via Dan Ambrose: Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano will meet in a rematch on March 12 or 19 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. They were previously scheduled for February 26, but that is being pushed back to March.

Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) will take the title of IBF, WBA and WBC junior middleweight champion when he faces WBO champion Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs) two months on from now.

The venue will still be in Houston, which will give Texas-born Charlo an edge. Last July, Charlo faced Castano in a controversial draw in San Antonio, Texas, which many boxing fans felt the Argentine should have won.

Castano looks like a better boxer, but fighting in Texas could arguably have saved Jermell from a loss. Charlo struggled with Castano’s pressure on him, especially during the second half of the fight.

Castano showed Jermell as a limited boxer as he failed to score by knockout. He may be out, but we already know that with Tony Harrison beating Charlo in their first fight in 2018.

In their rematch, Harrison would probably have beaten Jermell again if he hadn’t been caught in the 11th round and eliminated in December 2019.

At the end of the competition, the scoring part took place everywhere, the judges revealed this strange set of pictures:

  • 114-114
  • 117-111 – Jermell
  • 114-112 – Castano

The umpire who gave Charlo a score of 117-111 was severely derided by boxing fans who wondered what was going on in his mind to get this odd score.

This is not the first time Charlo has been saved from a loss. Charlo’s wins over Austin Trout, Vanes Martirosyan and Gabe Rosado are questionable, with some boxing fans believing he was given the decisive gift.

Jermell is a popular boxer, but he can be knocked out for focusing too much on ambushing opponents with single shots.

Instead of focusing on boxing his opponents, Charlo tries to knock them down with hits, but he doesn’t have the strength to win consistently using that approach.

If Charlo wins the rematch against Castano, he can undo when facing puncher Tim Tszyu. If Charlo tries to play with Tszyu, he could be in trouble.

Of course, Jermell’s management is very deft; they will be able to steer Tszyu for years to come by letting him vacate the WBO title if he beats Castano to claim that strap.

Tszyu is ranked #1 by the World Boxing Organization, and he’ll be looking to fight the winner.

It will be an interesting fight as long as the referees don’t spoil the rematch by giving their points. If you’re Castano, he should think about trying to take out Jermell because there’s a good chance we could see another weirdly scored game by the Texas umpires.
