Jermell Charlo must defend against the next Bakhram Murtazaliev

Via Sean Jones: Undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo will need to defend against Mandatory Bakhram Murtazaliev at his IBF next instead of WBO Mandatory Tim Tszyu.

Dan Rafael has a copy of a document where Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs) earlier this year, said he would defend against his undefeated IBF mandatory challenger Bakhram Murtazaliev (20 -0.15 KOs) next if he manages to get past WBO champion Brian Castano in their rematch.

Copy of documents by Rafael Jermell Charlo signed promises to face IBF mandatory Bakhram Murtazaliev.

The logical question is, how could Jermell not know that he was contracted to face Murtazaliev next, and not be able to fight Tszyu until after that.

It’s not yet clear if Jermell will face Murtazaliev, 29, who now lives in Oxnard, California, or if he will leave his IBF belt and join Tim Tszyu next.

Murtazaliev’s eight-year professional record is filled with unnamed opponents from top to bottom, and Sean Jones can’t find anyone he’s beaten worthy for him to be a mandatory challenger to the Union. International Boxing Union.

Murtazaliev’s 8 closest opponents:

  • Ahmad Cheikho (July 18)
  • Khiary Gray (May 16)
  • Manny Woods (September 16)
  • Fort Jorge (20-1-1)
  • Bruno Leonardo Romay (June 21)
  • Elvin Ayala (December 29)
  • Norberto Gonzalez (November 23)
  • Fernando Carcamo (August 23)

A few of those have been around for quite some time, but they’re arguably not nearly good enough for Murtazaliev to win the title because of the mandatory 154-lb IBF for Charlo.

You might think the IBF would insist that Murtazaliev beat one of these contenders to secure a required spot to face Jermell next:

  • Tim Tszyu
  • Carlos Adames
  • Israil Madrimov
  • Danny Garcia
  • Sebastian Fundora
  • Charles Conwell
  • Liam Smith

The main problem with collecting multiple titles is that the champion has difficulty defending against so many opponents that the average boxing fan has never heard of.

In Jermell’s case, it could be a good thing that he’s battling a little-known opponent that has never beaten anyone famous in his career. This increases Jermell’s chances of winning and holding his four titles longer than he would if he were to face Tim Tszyu or Terence Crawford next.

Jermell is about to have the biggest win of his career against Brian Castano, and he is clearly hoping to keep the momentum going in his career. In Charlo’s previous bout, he fought Castano in a 12-round draw last year in a match many boxing fans felt the Argentinian had won.
