Jermaine Dupri is reflecting on an early meeting he had with the singer Child’s face at the beginning of his career. As well as sharing more details about his previous love story with the female singer Janet Jackson.
Jermaine Dupri recalls early encounter with Babyface
The 50-year-old music producer and executive had a recent interview on Million dollar game audio file. He was thinking about a first single that he produced for the Hip-Hop duo Kriss Kross, titled “Dance,” released in 1992. However, he surprisingly explained that he almost had to “test” Babyface over the single.
“I came across Babyface by chance, and this was before I was more successful than Kriss Kross. Babyface was like, ‘Yes, you’re the one with the little jump record’. I looked at him like, ‘No *** a.’ He almost made me disrespect him. He said ‘lil’ jumped the record.’ And I’m JD – pretentious JD. I was like, ‘What? Small?’ He said, ‘Yeah, you know, it’s great that you do it once, but how many times can you do it?’”
Dupri went on to explain that despite his initial reaction, Babyface’s comments made him think more deeply about his career.
“At the time he said it, I didn’t think about it. I haven’t thought about it yet. ‘Yes, how many times can I do Kross Kross? How many times can I do ‘Jump’? And I remember sitting for about two hours… I didn’t look, I didn’t hear, nothing else for about two hours thinking about, ‘Oh damn. That doesn’t mean you can’t do this business again – if I can’t keep moving the needle.
The producer explains that his focus has forever changed from that day on.
“My focus since that day has always been, ‘I’ve done this, it’s time to move on.’ When it almost becomes a complete part of a project or product, then I move on to the next and that’s where I am. So I don’t even get caught up in it. So when people say ‘you’re humble’, I’m not even really in that space. I’m really thinking about the next thing.”

Gillllie, the podcast co-host, explained that he thinks the pair’s relationship started because Dupri produced songs for Jackson. However, Dupri explains that is not true.
“I just do some activities like ‘hanging out’… It’s not without music. We argued about me not producing her because she was around me watching everyone else hit hit records. I never wanted her to think that’s what the show does because so many people have said so.
Dupri went on to firmly assert that, despite his conflicting beliefs, he never wanted Jackson to feel that their relationship was entirely rooted in musical intent.
“I just said that’s it. It’s not that there aren’t situations where I want toeI believe I’m trying to do this – because it’s not.”
