Jeremy Hunt made chancellor after Liz Truss sacks Kwasi Kwarteng | Politics News

Jeremy Hunt has been appointed prime minister after the prime minister sacked Kwasi Kwarteng.

Mr Hunt is back in the front row after a few years out, having served as foreign secretary under Theresa May and health and culture secretary under David Cameron.

His date is a sign that Liz Truss is trying to get her match.

Mr Hunt was one of Rishi Sunak’s most prominent supporters during the Tory leadership campaign in the summer after he was dropped from the running.

The MP for South West Surrey since 2005, Mr Hunt has been a supporter since Boris Johnson took over from Mrs May in 2019.

He has been chairman of the Commons health and social care selection committee since 2020.

Mr. Kwarteng lost his job just 38 days after a disastrously small budget announcement that led to economic turmoil and subsequent U-turns.

Mr U-boi wants to eliminate the 45p income tax for higher earners first and the government will impose a business freeze tax rate at 19%, so it will increase to 25%.

‘Tax cuts are not sexy, but necessary’

In July, Mr Hunt told Sky News that a corporate tax cut was “unattractive, but necessary” because he supported a plan to reverse the planned increase.

“I am someone who not only thinks we should stop raising corporate taxes, I think we should cut them so they are the lowest in Europe and North America,” Mr. Hunt said.

“No Conservative should promise a non-refundable tax cut. Because a non-refundable tax cut is just an increase in debt that future generations will have to pay.”
