Human rights groups have long criticized hanging, claiming it affects the mental health of prisoners, but the government has shown that the public supports the death penalty to a high degree. An opinion poll of more than 1,500 people conducted by the Cabinet Office at the end of 2019 found that 80% of respondents supported this approach.
