James Yap is set to return to his PBA in the end-of-season Governors League after signing a one-time deal with Rain or Shine.
Rain or Shine made the announcement Friday through its social media accounts, posting a snap of Yap alongside team governor Mamerto Mondragon and assistant team manager Jireh Ibanes.
The team also said Rain or Shine offered a one-year contract but the 40-year-old opted for a shorter contract due to his commitments as a San Juan city councilor.
“Yap said he would do his best to balance basketball and community service,” said Rain or Shine.
Yap hasn’t played since the 2021 Philippine Cup as he averaged 7.9 points and 2.0 rebounds in seven appearances.
rain or shine allow Yap to rest after that conference to allow him to focus on what turned out to be a successful political campaign.
He has appeared in several Rain or Shine games during the Commissioner’s Cup and has been involved in the preparations for the third conference scheduled to open this month.
This will be Yap’s first time under coach Yeng Guiao in the PBA ranks after playing for his fiery mentor with the national team at the 2009 AFC Asian Cup and Asian Games. Asia 2018.
His experience is expected to be a valuable aid to a young squad that is about to reach the quarterfinals in Guiao’s first conference since returning to the Elasto Painters camp.
