James Yap, Charo Soriano lead election winners among sports personalities
MANILA, Philippines — PBA star James Yap and former Ateneo standout player Charo Soriano are among many sports figures who have won seats in the 2022 election.
Yap, who play for The Painters of Rain or Shine Elastoclaimed a council seat after placing fourth in San Juan’s first district.
Yap’s former teammates Paul Artadi and Don Allado also won bids to be their respective councilors. Artadi was elected councilor in the first district for the third time while Allado secured the final spot in the second.
All three ran under the support of Francis Zamora, who won his bid for re-election as Mayor of San Juan.
Soriano, meanwhile, is on his way to becoming a councilor in the futureher hometown’s only district is in Tuguegarao.
Votes are from partial and unofficial results from the Election Commission’s transparent server (Comelec) as of 4:31 p.m. Tuesday.
Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), was appointed Mayor of Tagaytay City after running for office.
Another former PBA star in Dondon Hontiveros was declared the top councilor in Cebu City with over 133,000 votes.
PBA legend Vergel Meneses is poised to win his re-election bid for mayor in Bulakan, Bulacan.
Dodot Jaworski, executive friend of incumbent Pasig mayor Vico Sotto, who achieved a second term, meanwhile, won the race for vice mayor.
Former player and coach Franz Pumaren is also on track to win a congressional seat in the third district of Quezon City.
However, PBA greats like Alvin Patrimonio and Philip Cezar were not so lucky.
Patrimonio lost heavily to Elen Nieto, wife of outgoing Mayor Kit Nieto, in the mayoral race in Cainta, Rizal while Cezar, who is running for Vice Mayor of San Juan, also lost by a margin. big.
Former taekwondo fighter Monsour del Rosario, who is running for senator, is in 29th place with 3,766,486, as of 4:31 pm
