James Cleverly leads the Tory leadership race as Tugendhat is eliminated

Former Home Secretary James Cleverly rose to the top of the Conservative Party leadership contest on Tuesday, after former Security Secretary Tom Tugendhat was ousted.

In the third round of voting by MPs on Tuesday, Ingenious won 39 votes, an increase of 18 votes from the previous round, after regaining momentum at the party’s annual congress last week.

He was followed by former immigration minister Robert Jenrick with 31 votes, down two votes in the final round.

Former business secretary Kemi Badenoch won 30 votes, up two votes.

Tugendhat dropped out of the race after finishing last with 20 votes, one less, after losing at the Birmingham gathering.

Another candidate will be eliminated on Wednesday in the fourth round of voting, with the final two candidates placed on party lists.
