James Cameron Wants To Avoid “Stranger Things Effect” With Avatar Sequels

While it’s still uncertain whether future films in the Avatar series will progress, writer and director James Cameron has been thinking before producing Avatar: The Way of Water. Talk to Weekly entertainmentCameron explained that to help future young actors age quickly through each film, he shot scenes in Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 concurrently with the recently released sequel.

The Way of Water introduces several young characters, including Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, 7 years old when cast and now 13) and Spider (Jack Champion, 12 years old when cast but now 18). Because Champion “grows like weeds”, the second, third, and first acts of the fourth film had to be done in one production.

“Otherwise you get – and I love Stranger Things – but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to be still in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” Cameron said. “You know, I love this show. It’s okay, we’ll suspend the skepticism. We like the characters, but, you know.”

All that is known so far about the upcoming sequels, as producer Jon Landau said in the same installment, is that each will introduce audiences to new biomes. “Each movie will introduce audiences to new tribes, new cultures on Pandora,” says Landau. “After we introduce a character, they’re still part of the ongoing development. We’re just adding to that. So you can expect to see the Metkayina you meet in this movie. in the next movies there are other clans that we will introduce in movie 3 that you will see in movie 4 etc.

Avatar 2 continues to make a mark at the box office nearly $500 million worldwide as Disney movies cross $4 billion by 2022.
