NEW DELHI: In addition to a review of energy and trade relations in the context of Western sanctions, India and Russia will use the foreign minister Jaishankar‘s visit Moscow on Tuesday also to finalize the cooperation agenda within the multilateral framework including the G-20, the SCO and the BRICS. The situation in Afghanistan and counter-terrorism are also among the issues that will be highlighted in the meetings.
Jaishankar, who was supposed to encourage Moscow to once again end the conflict with Ukrainewill meet his partner Sergey Lavrov and Russian Trade Minister Denis Manturov during his visit.
Jaishankar will come to Moscow amid another wave of imports from Russia with news emerging on Sunday that Russia was India’s No. 1 crude oil supplier in October. It accounted for 22% of India’s crude oil imports. Russia has surpassed Iraq (20.5%) and Saudi Arabia (16%).
The two countries are also discussing the possibility of holding a summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Bali later this month.
Russia is likely to discuss the alleged threat of a “dirty bomb”, which, according to Moscow, is being carried out in Ukraine. However, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, last week said it had found no evidence of any undeclared nuclear activity in Ukraine.
Moscow is also capable of carrying out “terrorist attacks” on the Black and Baltic Seas and has been accused by Ukraine and the US of violating the Biological Weapons Convention. Russia recently introduced a resolution at the UNSC to investigate these allegations but the resolution was defeated when only China, excluding Russia, voted in favor. India was among the 10 countries that abstained.
Although last week, India voted in favor of another resolution put forward by Russia at UNGA against glorification of Nazism.
