Jailed Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain Gets Relief From Delhi Court On His Food Request
New Delhi:
Jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain will continue to receive “appropriate food” in accordance with his religious beliefs, a municipal court said today. The court said the arrangement will continue until it decides on the matter.
Mr Jain has complained to the court that he is not provided with food according to his religion and that prison management is imposing restrictions.
Mr. Jain only eats after going to the temple, but because he is in prison, he cannot go to the temple, so he has only eaten fruit for the past five months, his lawyer said.
The Supreme Court has sought answers from Delhi’s Tihar Prison and will hear the case at 2pm tomorrow.
Mr. Jain said in a court filing that he had not been provided with proper food and medicine since his arrest on May 31. In the past 12 days, prison management has stopped providing him with food. basic products consistent with his religious beliefs, Jain alleges.
“The applicant is being starved by the prison authorities and is not provided with food or nutrition to maintain his or her health. The applicant is entitled to the aforementioned basic food items because of his religious beliefs and his fast,” his application reads.
His lawyer argued that fast-cooked foods, beans, grains and dairy products were banned by the minister, asserting that Mr Jain was “a strict follower of Jainism”.
Mr Jain was arrested in a money laundering case and charged with corruption. He was denied bail last week.
