Jaguar F-Pace PHEV: long-term test review

Rarely does a facelift make such a profound improvement to a car. Jag’s Pivi Pro technology is superb and the interior trim makes it back among the class leaders. The new PHEV powertrain is also impressive; keep it charged and can easily be more than 50mpg.

Sports Utility Vehicles typically offer much less than their predecessors. But there are exceptions to the rule and Jaguar F-Pace provided much of the information the company knew about sports salons and Coupésdistilled into a much more practical package.

Times have changed, though, so for the 2022 facelift the fundamentals remain the same, but the F-Pace has been stepped up in the areas where it is falling behind: technology and electrification.

That’s why I found myself talking to Ahmed Rahman, sales manager at Beadles Jaguar in Southend, Essex, when he showed me our new F-Pace: a plug-in P400e in the R-Dynamic SE and Portofino Blue specifications.

Ahmed gave me a tour of the gallery intact; you can pretty much eat food from the floor and it’s a premium experience every inch. He says: “Jaguar and Land Rover is all about personalization, personal touch. ” That became clear when he led me into one of the two handover rooms.

In the center of the room was an F-Pace covered in black cladding; in the corner there are balloons, some delicious cake, juice and a bottle of bubbly. That’s what we want to do for all of our customers, says Ahmed.

For many people, their Jaguar collection is all about the big reveal. Ahmed said his phone is filled with videos of customers eagerly pulling back the black sheets on their new cars. And after doing exactly that, it feels as dramatic as you might hope.

Ahmed showed me the interior of the F-Pace; it’s hard not to be impressed by the design, fit and finish. It feels every inch is premium product, as you might expect it will have a list price of £63,615. The black leather sport seats are extremely comfortable and the cabin is equipped with high-quality materials.

But it is the new Pivi Pro infotainment that is the star. It centers around an 11.4-inch curved touchscreen, sporty, elegant graphics, and a user interface that easily matches anything else on the market. Ahmed shows off ‘Hey Jaguar’ voice commands, though I’d love to see if they replace Siri on my iPhone. All the usual features are built into the Pivi Pro, including a wide range of camera angles that feel a lot like the kind of kit you’ll find on Land Rover models and are really useful on the go and Parking Big SUV.

The F-Pace falls into that category, but responsive steering, good visibility and well-regarded suspension make it feel more nimble than you’d expect. Those dynamic capabilities are perfectly complemented by the plug-in powertrain. It’s basically the same system as our long-term features Land Rover Defender, but shortening the weight of that car, the Jag feels more alive, powerful and sporty. In Dynamic mode, it decelerates in 5 seconds 0-62mph, which is fast enough. While it cannot hold a torch to hot SVR model In a straight line, the P400e can sound the roar of a V8 through the speakers.

A full charge takes a few hours from a home wall box or just 30 minutes from a DC charger – the F-Pace is one of the few PHEV to have this ability. Jaguar claims a 33-mile range is entirely possible, but it’s actually closer to 28. So far, most of my short journeys have been EV power, while I attach it mixture mode for longer trips. Here, I tend to max out at around 55mpg – impressive, but in stark contrast to around 30mpg when the battery is dead.
