Ms Ardern continued: “While I will not be running in the (next) election, I know the issues that affect New Zealanders most will remain the focus of government this year and into the future. election.”

The outgoing prime minister also said she would remain a member of Mount Albert’s parliament until April.

Speaking of her decision to step down, she said: “I know there will be a lot of discussion after this decision about what the so-called ‘real reasons’ are.

She added that beyond that she has “no plans” and “no next step” but she will “try and find a way to continue working for New Zealand”.

Ms Ardern concluded by saying: “During my time at work, I hope to be able to leave New Zealand believing that you can be kind but strong, empathetic yet assertive, optimistic but focused.

“And that you can be your own kind of leader – someone who knows when it’s time to go.”

Ms Ardern enjoyed high approval ratings for most of her two-term term in the face of a difficult election campaign in 2023.
