It’s a pasta joke! Edinburgh Fringe’s top gag is corny one-liner about spaghetti

A pun about pasta has been named the funniest joke by the Edinburgh Fringe as the prize is handed out after the pandemic.

Comedian Masai Graham was voted the winner with his gag: ‘I tried to steal spaghetti from the store, but the security lady saw me and I couldn’t get the pasta.’

Publicly voted Dave’s Funniest Joke Award is back for the first time since 2019.

It is the second time the West Bromwich-born comedian has won after winning in 2016 with the joke: ‘My dad suggested I apply for a sponsor card – he’s a man who follows his heart My own.’

Graham said: ‘It’s great to see the Edinburgh Fringe back in action, it’s my spiritual home. I was so excited when I found out I won a second time – I thought, “This is a pasta joke”. ‘

Critics attended hundreds of performances at the Fringe festival to compile the shortlist, which was voted on by 2,000 public members.

None of them were told the names of the comedians in the race for the title.

Previous winners of the award, now in its 13th year, include Tim Vine, Ken Cheng, Olaf Falafel, Rob Auton, Stewart Francis, Zoe Lyons and Nick Helm.

Channel director Dave Cherie Cunningham said: ‘It’s been a pleasure to be back in Edinburgh. This is Dave’s first Joke of the Fringe in three years, and the quality of the entries has been strong.

‘It’s been a great top 10 full of newcomers and comedy veterans, and it’s a pleasure to hand out Masai Graham as the winner again.’
