It’s a familial relationship for the Davises at Saratoga

Robbie Davis was in no hurry to let go of her sinful 3-year-old Vallelujah on the morning of August 14.

The former equestrian trainer hugged his half-New York daughter Teuflesberg when he shows her off to anyone who visits his barn. He is entitled.

Vallelujah beat a Saratoga shock a day before she lit the tote board at 24-1 odds. What makes this win even more special to the Davis family is that it is the second victory of Robbie’s coaching career at Saratoga Racecourse. The first came in 2013.

The cherry with the maxim above was his daughter, Jackie, riding Vallelujah and this was her first victory in Saratoga. It’s a family affair. What made it even better was that they all called Saratoga home.

“It really is,” Davis said. “That’s what we work for. It’s great to be a part of that first win for her. And, yes, I’ve got a big tumor in my throat. Maybe win Winning with my daughter is a very special thing.”

Davis and his wife, Marguerite, have six children. Two of them – Dylan and Jackie – currently ride horses and another, Katie, is a former jockey. Another son, Edmund, is a coach.

Vallelujah is owned by East Ave Racing Stables and Sisu Racing Stables, and that’s a separate story. During the raging days of COVID-19, the Saratoga meeting was closed to the public in 2020.

Enthusiastic fans of the meet will gather outside the track and use ladders to peer through the green screens placed on the fence to prevent anyone from watching from the street.

Robbie Davis said: “I would go around on my horse and would come over and ask what they were doing. “I told them if they really wanted to come in, they should buy a horse and they could all be partners and they’d let you in.”

That’s exactly what they did. They bought the shark bred by Carolyn Karlson, and the rest is history. Davis said this girl was born on Valentine’s Day and after the group said: “Hallelujah!” name became Vallelujah.

The first Saratoga victory in Davis’ coaching career came with Sandyinthesun .

His stable has only three horses.

“I like to ride in the morning,” said Davis, 61, who has won 3,382 races as a jockey. “It’s not a job, it’s what I love to do.”
