Is the 3-star Bayonetta the alternative Cereza? Platinum opposes popular fan theory

When the first Bayonetta 3 gameplay trailer was released last year, her new braided hairstyle caught the attention of fans because it resembled the appearance of Cereza, the little girl tagged with a human. play in the first game. Spoiler for Bayonetta 1: Cereza is a child version of Bayonetta, so perhaps our hero simply wants to return to his boyhood roots. However, the third game’s focus on the multiverse has led some fans to consider a more tantalizing theory.

First, to provide some context, here’s a (relatively) quick update on Bayonetta’s plot for newcomers or fans who have gone missing. Five hundred years before the events of the first game, Bayonetta, whose real name is Cereza, was born the child of an Umbra Witch and a Lumen Sage. Since the Light-worshipping Sages were rivals to the witches wielding darkness, this was considered a forbidden alliance. As a result, Cereza’s mother, Rosa, was taken into custody. So the witches considered Cereza an outcast during her childhood and initially forbade her from learning magic (but she did anyway), despite Rosa’s best efforts to raise Cereza. despite.

Young Jeanne is the only witch to show true kindness to Cereza, befriending her and forming a bond that will last a lifetime. Twenty years later, the witch hunts that led to the destruction of the Umbran order begin. Jeanne is chosen to lead the party into battle, and she chooses to fight Cereza as a final test of her abilities (to the annoyance of the Umbran elders). The angels attack the witches in this duel, and Rosa is killed. This loss caused Cereza to lose the will to fight. To protect Cereza, Jeanne sealed her at the bottom of the lake, helping Cereza escape the extinction of the Umbran Order. Centuries later, Cereza wakes up in the modern day with her memory wiped clean, including her real name, which is why she adopted the alias Bayonetta.

Cereza and the young Bayonetta in the first game.

As Bayonetta 1’s story unfolds, she encounters a childish version of herself. Neither of them recognize the other due to Bayonetta’s amnesia, and young Cereza believes adult Bayo is their mother, due to the similarity. They bond for most of the game, and it is later revealed that little Cereza was captured from the past and brought to the present by their father and the game’s villain, Baldur. We’ll leave out why Baldur did this (a lot), but the game ends with baby Cereza being returned to her proper timeline.

However, this act creates a new parallel universe where once lonely and shy Cereza, now through the love and fortitude of her older self, gains the confidence to fight back. back in the witch hunts. Since she joined the battle, Jeanne never sealed her away, and the two tried to fend off their attackers. There are some other important elements at play here (such as the Left Eye of Darkness), but that’s the gist of the story.

Now, all of that has led fans to speculate that the witch we’re playing in Bayonetta 3 is an alternate version of Cereza and not the “main” Bayonetta. So which witch are we meeting? When I asked director Yusuke Miyata, he had a hard time giving an answer.

Miyata said: “I can neither confirm nor deny whether this is an adult version of Cereza. “Since this game involves the concept of a multiverse, she could be Bayonetta from an alternate universe who looks like Cereza, or it could be an adult Cereza. I want to leave this up to the player’s imagination as they enjoy the game. “

So you have it. While it may not be a concrete answer, the fact that Miyata hasn’t quelled this rumor completely means that fans who believe in it can have hopes of survival. Or, at least, we’re still playing like the Bayonetta we know and love, and Miyata doesn’t want to storm the players’ parades. It’s nice to see Platinum officially endorse this theory, if nothing else.
