Is Rudy Gobert Stalling the NBA Commercial Market?

The NBA commercial market has slowed significantly in recent weeks, and a key factor can be blamed on the lack of relative movement.

Despite the availability of stars like Donovan Mitchell and Kevin Durant, no major deals seem close anywhere across the NBA. This is largely due to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ acquisition of Rudy Gobert, by Fred Katz of The Athletic. Minnesota’s decision to trade three unprotected first-round picks, as well as another pick with the top five defending, to buy Gobert from the Utah Jazz changed the trade market. The prices of the likes of Mitchell and Durant are so high that teams don’t want to compare them.

Gobert is considered an excellent defender, but not a major attacking threat. Mitchell and Durant are franchise platforms and should theoretically command more than Gobert. The problem is that very few teams can even afford to give up more than Minnesota did for Gobert, and it would be difficult to assemble a competitive team around each star if they made such a move. .

Trade Utah-Minnesota has is supposed to be a great source of disappointment for the GMs around the league. It has essentially disrupted the commercial market and there may be no way to reset it this season.
