Khamzat won the gold medal in the 86 kg category in both the 2016 and 2017 Swedish national freestyle championships. He had a strong run of form at the tournament.
On November 19, 2021, Chimaev defeated UFC contender Jack Hermansson in a freestyle wrestling match at Sweden-based Bulldog Fight Night 9.
