Do Instagram know where you are Yes, every other social media app knows your location, but that doesn’t mean every user on the app knows it too.
Recently, an Instagram user posted a post saying ‘people can find your exact location from Instagram’, following a new update on Instagram. iOS that activated exact location share for the app. The same post goes on to assert that some individuals are using location to target people who have shared their “exact location” to track them.
So far, there are no reports of such incidents as it is just a hoax. That’s not how precise location works Iphone or even Android phones.
When you download any app on your iPhone or Android phone, it will ask you to allow access to camera, microphone, contacts and location to work properly, do not share that app with other users. Similarly, apps ask for your location because they may have some features that need your location. Instagram needs your location for location tags and map features, and they say the same in their statement.
How does exact location work?
“Exact location” is not something new that has appeared recently. The option to turn “exact location” on or off has been around longer than you think. Apple first introduced “exact location” with iOS 14, and some other Android phones now have this option.
Why is it enabled by default? You can request. It’s simple, some apps need to know your exact location to work and that’s why it’s enabled for them.
The ride-hailing app on your phone needs to know your exact location, which makes sense. Instagram says it needs your “exact location” for story tags and maps. However, knowing a social networking app knows your exact location is something most people wouldn’t be okay with. And that’s why there’s an option to turn off exact location, even Instagram suggests so, so there’s not much to worry about.
Depending on the user, they can choose to share their exact location with “exact location” enabled, or tell the app their approximate coordinates.
