iRobot’s newest Roomba automatically vacuums and mops your floors

There are many robots that say they can vacuum and mop your floors, but never please anyone. With some, you have to mess with the system to add the mop midway, others it will pull the dirty cloth through your clean carpets and rugs. That’s a problem I’m a robot spent many technical resources trying to solve, saying that Combo j7+ is the solution. Co-founder and CEO Colin Angle describes it as “the first legitimate 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot ever created.”

Instead of requiring the user to make changes during a task, the j7+ features a standard vacuum body at the top. When it’s finished, however, a pair of recessed arms pull the mop pad placed at the top of the chassis to the floor. From there, it will pull the pad along your hard floor, before pushing it away if and when it has to cross the carpet. All the user has to do is change the bag and refill it with water, which can take up to 60 days at a time.

Angle and iRobot product manager Praj Shyamkant says the plan is to ensure that the mop will never come into contact with your soft surfaces. And users can expect the device to do what you would expect from its description without any micromanagement. Assume that the unit lies on the same footprint as standard (fecal detection) j7It also requires a lot of engineering to shrink all the novelty devices into its body.

At the same time, iRobot wants to show off the power of the new iRobot OS 5.0, the latest and greatest operating system. This includes better integration with home and phone assistants like Siri and Alexa, the ability to indicate cleaner areas for better attention and better avoidance of danger. You can also modify mission plans on the fly, banishing your Roomba from a room where you’re about to do a Zoom call, for example. iRobot also wants to affirm its commitment to protecting its users’ data, never to sell it to third parties, and that it is guaranteed the TÜV SÜD Cybersecurity certification for its data hygiene.

The Roomba Combo j7+ is available to pre-order today and will cost $1,099 in the US, with shipments starting October 4. It will be available in the UK for £999, but you You can also pick up a version without the Clean Base for £799, while other countries can expect it to arrive until the end of Q4 2022.
