IPL 2022: Mental exhaustion affecting Virat Kohli, accepting current phase with brutal honesty might help him, says sports psychologist Dr. Priyanka Sarkar | Cricket News


NEW DELHI: That Virat kohli is a great modern day no secret. Over the years, the former India captain has wowed cricket fans around the world with his batting ability.
But just like what has happened to most high-priced sellers in the past, Virat is also going through a small patch. The biggest issue here is that the skinny patch has become an expansion, going up to the very high standards that fans are used to seeing Virat set for themselves.
A lot has happened in the last eight months or so. He resigns as captain of T20I India, resigns as RCB captain and was substituted for captain India ODI.
Centuries continued to elude him, but without a doubt the focus was on this simply because over the years he had set the bar too high.

Coach RCB Mike Hesson recently said that Kohli is as frustrated as anyone else.
In IPL 2022 Kohli has only scored half a century so far. His runs in this release to date – 236 runs in 13 games with an average of 19.66, also including three ducks. But he is also the player with the highest number of runs in IPL history with 6519 runs under his belt.

He knows he’s going through a rough patch in his career. Coach RCB Sanjay Bangar was seen comforting Kohli, hugging him and talking to him.

There is no doubt about the sheer talent that Virat possesses. What a lot of people don’t do is put themselves in his shoes to try and understand how difficult not being able to be in the races can be for a prolific runner like him. To try and understand what was going on in his mind.
According to reports, Virat could be rested for the five-match T20I vs South Africa series at home, in June.
TimesofIndia.com spoke with sports psychologist, Dr Priyanka Sarkar to talk about the spiritual side of everything Virat and his slime patch.
Dr. Sarkar, a sports psychologist by profession in IT, has worked closely with both individual and team sports athletes in areas such as sprinting, rifle shooting, tennis, racing moto kart, cricket and football.

Have you discovered a mental block or mental problem related to Virat Kohli’s decline in form?
For someone who became the first hitter to score 6500 runs in the IPL and make history, mental block might be an odd term to connect (him) with. It’s not always a mental error when a player isn’t up to the level he’s capable of. It could be a technical error or a bug. If there is no response from the man himself, it can be considered a mental problem.
Mental breakdown is inconsistency in performance, playing timidly, showing emotions or avoiding practice matches or games and Virat Kohli has done nothing of this sort. Yes, he is disappointed and sad but that comes from not being satisfied with his performance. He is a world-class player who knows his abilities well and the expectations surrounding him. It’s just that his strengths at the moment don’t translate into points on the pitch.

He is very confident in his skills and the recent interview that he will be back to score is proof of that. His motivation to work hard and confidence to achieve great success are still intact. The tears, frustrated expressions, and gazes at the sky you see are signs of disbelief that his hard work isn’t paying off. Instead of the term mental block, I would refer to it as mental exhaustion. This is why as a man – who is known for his aggressive playstyle and emotions – what you see is a growing level of negative emotion on the screen.
Anxiety-related thoughts, the psychological effects of past game mistakes, over-analyzing and having to make decisions with built-in mental stress drain the mind, leading to poor shot.
Almost every great player goes through small patches. What is your advice for Virat at this point?
Sometimes a sporting identity does more harm than good. Virat Kohli is known for his better performances than his life on the pitch and his name is synonymous with success. So passing a patch seems (is a) difficult phase to associate with (in itself). But accepting the stage with brutal honesty can help him work through his inner feelings of sadness and disappointment about his performance. Virat may have hit every possible milestone in his career and so a few golden ducks might not fit his identity and so the pressure mounts.
His past and continued success are and will always be the measure of his future performances, not only of Virat but also of millions of cricket lovers.

Virat should live in the moment, and accept that his form is not at its best but brooding doesn’t make things any better. Instead, he can do a SWOT analysis and set goals on how he can turn threats into opportunities and weaknesses into strengths using positive statements.
For example, instead of “No more golden ducks”, he could use sentences like “Will hit at least 6 balls in the match”. Acknowledging his current form, keeping faith in his ability and showing resilience until he finds new form is key. Easier said than done, but Rome was not built in a day.
There is a very human side to the problems he is facing – Pressure to perform, while not managing to find the x-factor that makes him click. How does one get out of a slump like this – no matter what field of work you might be in?
There is nothing better than taking care of yourself at this time. With so many tips, comments, and reviews thrown at him, the last thing he needs is another expert opinion. It’s certainly an added pressure even for a sports athlete who has lived in the limelight since debut.
Self-care is paramount at times like these when one is going through a difficult time as people tend to forget themselves quite often. Self-care is the key to a productive and long-lasting career no matter what field one works in.
While there’s no clear explanation for what self-care looks like or the best strategies a person can use, the little things make a big difference. Make healthy choices, start a new hobby to distract you from the pressure, and make self-care a necessity rather than a luxury if time permits. Through self-care, one can replace anxiety/stress with anxiety, dissatisfaction with healthy anger, uncertainty with anticipation, and boredom with excitement.

Is it mandatory for Virat to stay away from all social media at this time? Could experiencing self-critical writings add to the difficulty of trying to pull yourself out of this slump?
Selective exposure and interaction are words I like to use here. With social media and ubiquitous information on every platform, things can get tough for an athlete. But consciously selective about interactions and exposure can have a positive effect on him.
People form perceptions based on information available on different platforms and make judgments. And this will negatively affect someone when they are already stressed. But staying away from social media entirely may not be a possibility due to other commitments.
Instead, Virat can practice selective exposure and interaction and call the photos about how willing he is to read and be influenced by these posts. It is reported that 70% of sports fans aged 13 to 37 do not watch live sporting events to follow the performances of their favorite players. Instead, they choose to follow them on social media. So one can imagine the dissemination of lies, rumors and misinformation. By practicing selective exposure and interaction, Virat can mitigate the ill effects of social media that can indirectly add to already existing pressures.
